Bear Necessities Volume 30
The spring seasons are underway and at times it seems like many of our programs schedules are influx due to unpredictable weather, referee shortages, and facilities. However, our athletes and coaches have shown flexibility and great resilience in adapting to change.
One of the more recent changes came with our Varsity Lacrosse game against Notre Dame Belmont. Originally scheduled to be hosted at Murray Field, however many of our seniors athletes were away on retreat, leaving us with an opportunity to shift the game to our JV team. While this change was not without its complications especially with facility restrictions and referee limitations once the confirmation came through, both the coaching staff and athletes were excited to seize this opportunity to play on home turf.
About 24 hours before the game, I received a call from another athletic director looking to host a JV game but only had one referee assigned. After some quick thinking and collaboration, we managed to combine the games into a doubleheader, ensuring both contests had proper officiating coverage. It was a bit of a logistical shuffle, but in the end, it was worth it as the team seized the afternoon and beat Notre Dame Belmont 9-2. Last season, Lacrosse faced similar challenges and had to host multiple games at The Harker School in San Jose, so this year's shift was far less disruptive. At the end of the day, the most important thing is ensuring our athletes have the chance to compete.
