Bear Necessities Volume 28
Last Wednesday, Mercy Lacrosse hosted an intense and wet game at Murray Field. Around 2:45 p.m., an atmospheric river hit, unleashing a torrential downpour. As the rain hammered down, I found myself questioning whether we would even be able to play.
The winds were howling at 25 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 40, and the rain showed no sign of letting up. Normally, I enjoy watching the planes come in to land at SFO, as the runway is visible from the field, but today, the visibility was so poor that day you couldn't even see the runway.
After meeting with the four coaches and walking the field, we consulted with the referees and made the decision to proceed with the game. Despite the adverse conditions, both teams took the turf for a brief warm-up, and play kicked off. The first quarter was tightly contested, with both teams tied at 3-3, but Mercy quickly found its stride. Leaning on their experience, The Bears began to build momentum, adding more goals to the scoreboard.
By the end of the third quarter, Presentation decided they had had enough and opted not to finish the game, leaving Mercy the victorious with a final score of 12-7.
While the weather made for a challenging experience, there were invaluable lessons to be learned. Our team showed perseverance and grit, recognizing that ball control was more important than ever. Above all, we demonstrated that we were in it together, supporting each other through every rain-soaked minute. Games like these, where the conditions are tough but the team pushes through, are the ones that stick with us the longest. A huge thank you to the parents who braved the storm to cheer on the Bears!
