Bear Necessities Volume 19
Historically, studies have shown the No. 1 reason students participate in high school sports is to have fun with their peers. Statistics seem to dominate sports culture today and education based athletics is no different. Too often in sports athletes tend to focus on statistics and outcomes. While they are important, they can sometimes strip away the joy of education based athletics.
At Mercy our programs adopt a "We before Me" mindset. This creates a foundation of trust and unity, qualities that can often lead to lasting success on and off the field. There's something powerful about fostering a culture where the focus is on connection and shared experiences rather than just individual accolades. When athletes can build relationships, create memories, and enjoy the process together, that's when the magic really happens. Often, the success that comes from those deeper bonds is more enduring than any win or championship. In my many years of competitive sports, I can not recall a single stat line from any game or match yet I vividly remember the many van rides.
This past Fall one of our coaches shared their surprise with their team's goal setting meeting. When they asked their athletes what they wanted out of the season they prioritized fun and friendships over competition and results. It shows that when people feel supported and valued, they perform at a higher levels. That team, had one of the most successful seasons in our program history. It's a reminder that success isn't just about the end result but about how you build and grow together along the way.
